Google maps gets on-board with real-time travel info
03 October, 2018
CBD commuters who use Google Maps will soon have access to real-time traffic and public transport trip information in the app.
Google has announced a new Commute feature which will provide real-time alerts for any crashes, traffic or other delays that could affect a user’s trip and even suggest alternate routes.
Maps will also include a new feature for people who use more than one mode of transport on their trip. The app will suggest the best time to leave home and provide information for each leg of a trip, such as traffic conditions for your drive, when the next train or bus will depart, and how long it will take to walk from the station or stop to work.
Public transport customers in 80 regions worldwide will be able to see exactly where their bus or train is in real time on the map – a handy feature for deciding whether to make a dash for the nearest stop or station, or grab a quick coffee instead.
In Sydney, Google has partnered with Transport for NSW to also show helpful arrival and capacity information for the next bus or train.
Music lovers will also be able to control Spotify, Apple Music and Google Play Music within Maps itself, removing the need to switch apps to change tunes.
The new Google Maps Commute feature is supported by Transport’s commitment to giving developers and data analytic centres open access to transport data as part of Transport for NSW’s Open Data Hub, giving them the opportunity to create innovative solutions for customers.
Google’s new commute features will start rolling out globally on Android and iOS this week.
A number of transport real-time apps are also available for download.isit our Transport apps page for more information.
