Sydney Harbour Bridge to close on Sunday morning for Sydney Running Festival
09 September, 2019

Major roads including the Sydney Harbour Bridge will be closed from 4am this Sunday 15 September, with frequent trains and buses operating for the annual Sydney Running Festival.

More than 35,000 people are expected to take part in the Marathon, Half Marathon, Bridge Run and Family Fun Run which start at Bradfield Park in Milsons Point between 6am and 9am. Runners will head across the Harbour Bridge and through the CBD, Darlinghurst, Moore Park, The Rocks and Pyrmont.

“Avoid driving in these areas as detours will be in place and traffic will be heavy,” said a spokesperson for the Transport Management Centre.

“Public transport is the best option on Sunday, with travel included for event participants and volunteers.”

The Sydney Harbour Bridge, including all on and off ramps and the Cahill Expressway will be closed from 4am until 11am. The Western Distributor will be closed from Pyrmont to the city from 4am until midday.

“The Sydney Harbour Tunnel will remain open but there will be long delays so postpone travel until after midday, or use the Gladesville Bridge and Victoria Road instead.”

Major roads in the CBD, The Rocks, Darlinghurst and Pyrmont will also close from 4am, while roads in Moore Park will close from 5:30am. All roads are due to reopen by 1:30pm.

Special event clearways will be in place on roads along and surrounding the 42 kilometre course between 1am and 1:30pm.

“Check signs carefully before parking on Saturday night or Sunday, as all vehicles left in clearways will be towed, and a fee applies,” said the spokesperson.

Extra early morning trains will be running, with services stopping at Milsons Point every five to eight minutes from 5am until 9am.

Extra buses will also be running to the city and North Sydney, where you can change for one of the frequent trains to Milsons Point.

Due to the road closures, some buses will be diverting, ending their trips early or using temporary stops between 4am and 1:30pm.

“Buses that normally cross the Harbour Bridge will start and finish their trips at Town Hall, Martin Place or North Sydney while the bridge is closed.”

Trackwork will be taking place on parts of the T2 Inner West & Leppington Line and the T8 Airport & South Line, with buses replacing trains between Leppington and Glenfield, and between Glenfield and Sydenham.
