Wynyard Station's wooden escalator inspired artwork

A new heritage-inspired artwork was unveiled today featuring parts of the iconic wooden escalators at Wynyard Station’s York Street entrance, marking the official completion of the Wynyard Station Upgrade.

The upgraded station features a wider concourse, increased station capacity from 100,000 to 150,000 people per day, improved accessibility with new lifts and escalators, better facilities and amenities, improved pedestrian flows and more ticket gates.

Coordinator General, Marg Prendergast said the work is a key part of the transformation of the Sydney CBD and an integral gateway to Barangaroo and the financial district.

“As one of the busiest stations on the Sydney Trains network and an important transport interchange for the western CBD, Wynyard now boasts increased capacity to meet future demand as well as enhanced safety, comfort and accessibility,” Ms Prendergast said.

“Working in such a busy environment presented some tough challenges, but we were able to stage construction in a way that customers were still able to access train services during construction – minimising disruption at this busy part of the network.”

The installation unveiled above the upgraded York Street escalators incorporates 244 treads and 4 combs from the historic wooden escalators at Wynyard Station. The artwork created by artist Chris Fox, titled Interloop, was commissioned as part of the Heritage Interpretation Plan required to upgrade the escalators.

“While the new modern escalators at Wynyard Station are safer, more reliable and reduce the cost of maintenance, it was important to recognise the heritage status of Railway House and the York Street lobby as well as the iconic wooden escalators which were among the last of their kind in the world,” said Ms Prendergast.

“In addition to the impressive heritage-inspired artwork completed today, the heritage significance of the building is recognised in the architectural design of the upgraded lobby as well as a historic photo of the original escalators from the 1940s which customers can see as they travel down the new escalators.”

The Wynyard Station Upgrade was completed in two stages. The first stage of the upgrade was completed in September 2016, and work on the York Street entrance began in January 2017 as part of Stage 2.

The lighter, brighter and cleaner Wynyard Station seamlessly integrates with the revitalisation of the Barangaroo precinct including the high-capacity Wynyard Walk and Barangaroo Wharf which enable connections to Darling Harbour, Parramatta River, the Eastern Suburbs and the Lower North Shore.
